“When bootstrapping, time is both your friend and your enemy. It is your friend because you are owning your time and you can do whatever you want with it. It is also your enemy because this sense of ownership will often make you focus on futile things, and next thing you know, it’s been one year and you haven’t shipped a damn thing.”

This piece gives some insightful data comparing the costs of running a high-traffic website via co-located servers (self-hosted) vs AWS reserved instances. Of course this is not a one-size fits all statement, but for Patrick’s use-case he has calculated over 40% savings by opting for self-hosting.

Exploding Topics was first started as Trennd by Josh. After a successful launch that reached #1 on HN, he struggled to monetize despite having solid usage and growth. Not long after, Trennd got acquired by Brian, founder of Backlinko.com. That subsequently lead to the rebranding to Exploding Topics as well as some prudent changes like hiring professional bloggers to improve the newsletter. Josh documented this journey with an excellent post that I recommend reading (📰 17 min).

I wanted to spotlight Exploding Topics because it is able to coexist with large SEO tools like Ahrefs by carving out a focused niche that doesn’t try to do too much. The free newsletter is so simple to grok, while also providing clear value - helping readers learn about hot trends. The premium product is just as simple - helping professionals get even more valuable, earlier insights on hot trends.

With a powerful tool like Ahrefs, it is very hard to imagine building a competitor. With a simpler, more focused product like Exploding Topics, you can target many of the same customers, but in a way that is easy to understand and less daunting to build.
